Rund 21 Prozent rauchen täglich, rund 6 Prozent gelegentlich. Den höchsten Anteil von täglich Rauchenden gibt es im mittleren Erwachsenenalter, und die E-Zigarette wird vor allem von jungen Männern konsumiert.

Jede*r fünfte Österreicher*in raucht täglich

Die Gesundheitsbefragung der Statistik Austria liefert aktuelle Daten zum Rauchverhalten. Demnach rauchten mit Erhebungszeitraum Ende 2019 in Österreich 20,6 Prozent der erwachsenen Bevölkerung (ab 15 Jahren) täglich. Das sind 3,7 Prozent weniger als fünf Jahre davor. Bei Frauen ist der Rückgang mit minus 4,3 Prozent deutlicher als bei Männern mit 3,0 Prozent.

Der Anteil der täglich rauchenden Frauen ist geringer als jener der täglich rauchenden Männer (23,5 zu 17,8 Prozent). Täglich rauchende Frauen rauchen mit 13,3 Zigaretten durchschnittlich auch weniger als Männer, die täglich auf 17,1 Stück Zigaretten kommen.

Neben den 20,6 Prozent täglich Rauchenden in der österreichischen Bevölkerung rauchen 5,6 Prozent gelegentlich, also regelmäßig, aber nicht täglich. Ein Viertel der Bevölkerung (24,7 Prozent) sind Ex-Rauchende, und knapp die Hälfte (49,1 Prozent) hat nie geraucht.

Mehr als ein Drittel der aktuell täglich Rauchenden (36,4 Prozent) hat im letzten Jahr ernsthaft versucht, mit dem Rauchen aufzuhören.

Viele beginnen im jungen Erwachsenenalter

Gefragt, in welchem Alter sie begonnen hatten, täglich zu rauchen, zeigt sich: Obwohl der überwiegende Teil der täglich Rauchenden nach wie vor im Jugendalter (bis 19 Jahre) beginnt, fängt ein beträchtlicher Teil später an, nämlich 17 Prozent der Männer und 23,7 Prozent der Frauen.

Besonders sensibel ist neben dem Jugendalter das junge Erwachsenenalter (19 bis 29 Jahre). 13,6 Prozent der Männer und 18,8 Prozent der täglich rauchenden Frauen begannen im Alter zwischen 19 und 29 Jahren damit. Mit anderen Worten: Beinahe jeder sechste tägliche Raucher und nahezu jede fünfte tägliche Raucherin begannen nicht als Jugendliche damit, sondern als junge Erwachsene. Der Anteil der täglich Rauchenden ist bei den Männern im Alter von 35 bis 39 Jahren und bei Frauen im Alter von 45 bis 49 Jahren am höchsten. Jede 20. tägliche Raucherin begann erst ab dem 30. Lebensjahr damit.

Insgesamt gibt es in Österreich mehr als 2 Millionen Ex-Rauchende. Gezählt wurden dabei Menschen, die früher täglich geraucht hatten. 32,5 Prozent aller Männer und 23,5 Prozent aller Frauen sind Ex-Rauchende. Da weniger Frauen als Männer jemals geraucht haben, ist deren Anteil hier geringer. Von allen Personen, die jemals geraucht hatten, hörte mehr als die Hälfte damit auf (58 Prozent der Männer 57,1 Prozent der Frauen).

E-Zigarette ist jung und männlich

Erstmals wurde auch nach E-Zigaretten gefragt. Männer gaben fast doppelt so häufig wie Frauen an, bereits E-Zigaretten konsumiert zu haben (9,3 zu 5,1 Prozent). Täglich konsumieren jedoch nur 1,0 Prozent der Männer und 0,4 Prozent der Frauen E-Zigarette. Gelegentlich dampfen immerhin 2,2 Prozent der Männer und 1,5 Prozent der Frauen. Am häufigsten gaben junge Männer an, E-Zigarette zu konsumieren.
