„Dualer Konsum“ und „Single User“

Bleiben Rauchende bei einem Nikotinprodukt oder wechseln sie? Rauchen sie nur Zigarette, E-Zigarette oder beides? Greifen sie zwischendurch zum Tabakerhitzer, zur Pfeife oder zum Nikotinbeutel? Diese Fragen zu beantworten, ist für Österreich derzeit nicht möglich, da die Daten nicht vorhanden sind.

Dualer Konsum von Zigarette und E-Zigarette häufig

Was wir wissen ist ein hoher Anteil an dualem Konsum: In Österreich rauchen mehr als zwei Drittel der E-Zigaretten-Nutzer auch konventionelle Tabakzigarette. 68,3 Prozent von jenen, die täglich oder gelegentlich E-Zigarette konsumieren, rauchen auch täglich oder gelegentlich konventionelle Zigarette. Das ergab die Gesundheitsbefragung der Statistik Austria 2019. Vor allem junge Männer (19 bis 29 Jahre) greifen zur E-Zigarette. Von allen Bevölkerungsgruppen in Österreich ist der Konsum bei 19- bis 29-jährigen Männern am höchsten.

Nur 4 von 10 jungen Erwachsenen sind Single User

Über E-Zigarette und Zigarette hinausgehend hat den Mischkonsum eine US-amerikanische Studie unter die Lupe genommen. Untersucht wurden 4.700 junge Erwachsene (18 bis 29 Jahre), welche regelmäßig Nikotin konsumierten.

Vier von zehn (40,7 Prozent) nutzten nur ein Produkt („single users“). Bei der überwiegenden Mehrheit war das die konventionelle Tabakzigarette. Ein Drittel (33,7 Prozent) nutzte zwei Produkte („dual users“), und immerhin mehr als ein Viertel (25,6 Prozent) wechselten zwischen mindestens drei völlig unterschiedlichen Tabak- und Nikotinprodukten hin und her („poly product users“).  Das Phänomen hat nun in der Forschung auch einen eigenen Namen: „Multiple tobacco product (MTP) use“.

Besonders stark ausgeprägt war der Mischkonsum, wenn mindestens ein Produkt davon Menthol enthielt. Menthol war assoziiert mit einem eineinhalbfachen Risiko für multiplen Konsum.
