Einblick ins Rauchverhalten

Betrachtet man das Rauchen weltweit, so ist ein enorm großer Unterschied zwischen den Geschlechtern auffällig: Es rauchen viel mehr Männer als Frauen. Dies hat auch mit der historischen Entwicklung des Rauchens zu tun.

Rauchen in Europa

Laut European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) raucht in Europa knapp jeder fünfte Erwachsene (18,5 Prozent) täglich. Befragt wurde die Bevölkerung ab 15 Jahren. 5,9 Prozent der EU-Bevölkerung konsumierten täglich 20 Zigaretten oder mehr, weitere 12,6 Prozent weniger als 20 Zigaretten täglich. Dies berichtet die Europäische Kommission. in ihrer Tobacco Consumption Statistic. Die Bandbreite zwischen den Ländern ist dabei groß: So rauchen in Schweden nur 8,7 Prozent, in Griechenland und Bulgarien jedoch 27 Prozent. Erfragt wurde nur der Konsum von Tabakzigaretten. E-Zigaretten und rauchlose Nikotinprodukte wurden nicht erhoben. Erhebungszeitraum war 2014.

Eine andere EU-Statistik, veröffentlicht von Eurostat, weist innerhalb der Europäischen Union einen durchschnittlichen Raucheranteil von 23,9 Prozent aus. In den 28 Mitgliedstaaten der EU rauchten demnach im Jahr 2014 19,2 Prozent täglich und 4,7 Prozent gelegentlich. 76,1 Prozent waren Nichtrauchende und Ex-Rauchende. In dieser repräsentativen EU-Erhebung war der Raucheranteil in Österreich ungewöhnlich hoch: 22,9 Prozent der Befragten gaben tägliches, weitere 5,7 Prozent gelegentliches Rauchen an.

Rauchen in Österreich

Laut Gesundheitsbefragung der Statistik Austria 2019 raucht jeder fünfte Erwachsene (20,7 Prozent) täglich. Unter den Männern ist der Anteil täglich Rauchener deutlich höher als unter den Frauen (23,7 zu 17,9 Prozent). Bei beiden Geschlechtern sank der Anteil gegenüber dem Jahr 2014. Bei den Frauen war der Rückgang deutlicher ausgeprägt. In Österreich begannen die meisten täglich Rauchenden im Jugendalter (bis 19 Jahre) mit dem Rauchen. Aber immerhin knapp 20 Prozent fingen erst im Erwachsenenalter an zu rauchen, davon der überwiegende Teil im Alter von 19 bis 29 Jahren.

Von allen Personen, die jemals täglich geraucht hatten, hörte mehr als die Hälfte damit auf (Männer: 58,0 Prozent, Frauen: 57,1 Prozent). Insgesamt sind 32,5  Prozent der Männer und 23,7 Prozent der Frauen Ex-Rauchende. Sie haben früher täglich geraucht und sind nun rauchfrei. Das entspricht rund zwei Millionen Österreicher*innen.

Rauchen in der Steiermark

In der Steiermark wurde zuletzt 2017 eine repräsentative Bevölkerungsbefragung zum Rauchverhalten durchgeführt (VIVID 2017). Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass 17,4 Prozent der SteirerInnen ab 15 Jahren täglich und weitere 8 Prozent gelegentlich rauchen. Fast die Hälfte der Erwachsenen (47,3 Prozent) haben nie geraucht, und 27,3 Prozent haben aufgehört und sind damit Ex-Rauchende. In der Steiermark gibt es demnach mehr Ex-Rauchende als täglich und gelegentlich Rauchende.
