Der Konsum von Tabak und Nikotin schadet der Gesundheit. Kein einziges Organ des Körpers ist gefeit vor Schädigungen durch das Rauchen. Das zeigt sich auch beim Corona-Virus.

Schwerer Verlauf bei COVID-19-Erkrankung wahrscheinlicher

Wer raucht, infiziert sich durch die vermehrte Bewegung der Hand zum Mund häufiger. Wer raucht, hat aber auch eine deutlich größere Wahrscheinlichkeit für einen schweren Verlauf der Erkrankung. Er oder sie muss eher auf der Intensivstation behandelt werden, benötigt eher ein Atemgerät und verstirbt eher an COVID-19.

Eine US-amerikanische Studie untersuchte das Thema nun anhand von „Pack years“. Ein Pack year entspricht der Rauch-Menge von einer Packung Zigaretten (20 Stück), ein Jahr lang täglich konsumiert. Wer also 20 Jahre lang ein Päckchen täglich geraucht hat, hat 20 Pack years. Auch, wer zehn Jahre lang 40 Zigaretten täglich oder 40 Jahre lang zehn Zigaretten täglich geraucht hat, hat 20 Pack years.

Für die Studie 7.102 Patient*innen mit COVID-19 wurden zu ihrer Vergangenheit mit Tabak- und Nikotinprodukten befragt. Es war dabei unerheblich, ob sie zum Zeitpunkt des Krankenhaus-Aufenthalts noch rauchten oder nicht. Entscheidend war die Rauch-Menge ihres Lebens. Diese wurde mit dem Schweregrad der Corona-Infektion korreliert.

Es zeigte sich ganz eindeutig, dass Tabakkonsum zu schwereren Verläufen bei COVID-19 führt. Je mehr jemand in seinem Leben schon geraucht hatte, desto wahrscheinlicher wurde das. Corona-Patient*innen mit 30 Pack years oder mehr, mussten mit mehr als doppelt so häufig (Faktor 2,25) im Krankenhaus behandelt werden als. Sie starben auch fast doppelt so häufig (Faktor 1,89) an Corona als Nichtrauchende mit 0 Pack years.

Es gab keine signifikanten Unterschiede, ob die langjährigen Rauchenden bereits aufgehört hatten oder nicht. Entscheidend war die lebenslange Rauch-Mengen. Rauchen schwächt allgemein das Immunsystem des Körpers und kann einzelne Organe schädigen.

Grundsätzlich zeigen Befragungen: Nur ein geringer Teil ist mit dem eigenen Rauchverhalten zufrieden. Die Mehrheit der Rauchenden will aufhören. Professionelle Unterstützung kann dabei helfen. Die COVID-19-Pandemie kann hier eine wichtige Motivation sein.
