Ex-Rauchende gewinnen Sammelklage

Rauchen schadet der Gesundheit. Das erfahren Menschen am eigenen Leib, die nach jahrelangem Rauchen erkranken. Viele fühlen sich getäuscht und zu wenig über die negativen Folgen von Tabak- und Nikotinkonsum informiert.

Entscheidung nach 20 Jahren

In Kanada führte dies zu einer Sammelklage: 1999 reichten zwei Millionen (Ex-)Rauchende aus Kanada eine Sammelklage gegen die drei größten kanadischen Tabakkonzerne ein. Sie forderten Schadenersatz wegen der Verharmlosung der mit Tabak verbundenen Risiken. Allein der Prozessbeginn zog sich 13 Jahre lang. Das Gericht verurteilte die Tabakkonzerne schließlich zu den größten Schadensersatzzahlungen in der Geschichte Kanadas. Die Konzerne jedoch legten Berufung ein.

Erst im Jahr 2019, also 20 Jahre nach dem Einreichen der Klage wurde das Urteil gegen die drei Tabakkonzerne bestätigt. Da war ein Teil der Kläger*innen bereits verstorben. Der Fall gilt als Paradebeispiel für die Verzögerungstaktik der Tabakindustrie.
