Fünf Jahre rauchfreie Gastronomie

Seit November 2019 sind alle Lokal in Österreich rauchfrei - und das mit gutem Grund und viel Zustimmung durch die Bevölkerung.

Rauchverbot hilft der Prävention und der Entwöhnung

Seit November 2019 darf es in Österreich keine Ausnahmen vom Rauchverbot in der Gastronomie mehr geben. Die Einführung rauchfreier Gastronomie war ein Meilenstein der Gesundheitspolitik und der Tabakkontrolle in Österreich.

Grundsätzlich verbessert sich durch ein absolutes Rauchverbot in der Gastronomie die Gesundheit der Bevölkerung, allen voran der Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter. Es schützt vor dem gefährlichen Passivrauch und führte in anderen Ländern dazu, dass Menschen auch zuhause weniger rauchen. VIVID – Fachstelle für Suchtprävention hat in zehn Argumete zusammengefasst, warum gesetzlich festgelegte rauchfreie Gastronomie wichtig ist.

93,5 Prozent der steirischen Bevölkerung sind für rauchfreie Gastronomie. Zwei Jahre nach ihrer Einführung gab rund ein Viertel der steirischen Rauchenden an, seither weniger zu rauchen. Das und vieles mehr zeigt eine Befragung.

In Österreich hatte die Einführung eine wechselvolle innenpolitische Geschichte. Rauchfreie Gastronomie umfasst in Österreich alle Tabakprodukte und Verwandten Erzeugnisse. Dazu zählen auch E-Zigaretten, unabhängig davon, wie viel Nikotin sie enthalten. Auch Wasserpfeifen (Shishas) sind vom Rauchverbot erfasst, da sie Tabak enthalten.

Sehr wirksame Maßnahme

Die Einführung rauchfreier Gastronomie  zählt laut Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) zu den wirksamsten Einzelmaßnahme zur Reduktion des Tabakkonsums. Nur eine deutliche Anhebung des Preises – etwa über die Steuer – ist demnach noch wirksamer.

Strukturelle Maßnahmen wie rauchfreie Gastronomie unterstützen Prävention und Entwöhnung. Denn sie machen es für Menschen leichter, im öffentlichen Raum ohne Nikotin auszukommen. Damit fördern sie gleichermaßen das Nicht-Anfangen und das Aufhören. Nikotinfreiheit als Norm wird dadurch unterstützt.
